The Vision

Nestled into a landscape defined by world-class trails and alpine vistas, this new construction guest house represents the "first chapter" of a larger story. For a couple who spends their days skiing, biking, and running the endless backroads of the area, the goal was to create a landing pad that celebrated the outdoors while providing a serene, minimalist retreat for recovery.

As the first structure on a property where the primary residence will soon follow, the guest house was designed to stand alone as a complete home, yet remain in perfect conversation with the future architecture to come.

The Design Philosophy

The homeowners brought a refined sense of style to the project—a "warm minimalism" deeply influenced by their family ties to Nordic culture. They were thoughtful collaborators, offering insights that helped us tailor every square inch to their specific rhythm of life.

The aesthetic is defined by simple, clean lines and a palette of warm, natural finishes. We aimed to create a space that feels expansive and modern, yet maintains the "hygge" required for hosting extended family. It is a modest footprint that refuses to feel small, offering every comfort a guest (or a homeowner) could ask for.

Performance & Craft

Beyond the visual beauty, this is a high-performance structure built to withstand the elements of the high country. A truly collaborative design process—spearheaded by G4 Design Studios in partnership with Understory Design Build—allowed us to land on an exceptionally efficient layout. Together, we navigated the balance between ambitious design goals and budget, ensuring the ultimate outcome was a home that performs as well as it looks.

The envelope of the home is thoughtfully air sealed and insulated while featuring a balanced ventilation system to ensure constant fresh air. For heating and cooling, we utilized high-efficiency heat pumps, supplemented by a modern, high-efficiency wood stove that serves as the glowing heart of the living space during winter months.

The Lifestyle

Just steps from the main living area, a wood-fired sauna sits on-site, offering a traditional Nordic ritual to soothe tired muscles after a day on the trails. Whether it’s a quiet morning coffee overlooking the property or a house full of family visiting for the holidays, the home feels both intentional and welcoming.

This project is a testament to what happens when smart design meets a clear vision—a custom sanctuary that is uniquely theirs.
